Putting sustainability first
Pleijsier Bouw sets the standard for sustainable building.
At a time when sustainability is becoming an ever more prominent theme in life, it is one of the key pillars at Pleijsier Bouw. We don’t just consider the environment and the impact of construction on it, but we also care about people’s well-being. A great example of our commitment to a sustainable future and construction is the new office building in Nijkerk. Together with Borghese Real Estate, Pleijsier Bouw secured three prestigious certifications for this project. The building, officially opened on April 11, 2019, holds the WELL Gold Certification. This leading certification standard focuses specifically on the health and well-being of employees.
The building also earned the BREEAM-NL Outstanding sustainability certification. This is the highest certification achievable in the sustainability category. Lastly, the building nearly meets the European target for zero energy buildings by 2050. This new office is a first of its kind in the Netherlands. But we’re not done yet. Our goal is to deliver all our future projects with the highest possible sustainability rating and corresponding certifications. In this way, Pleijsier Bouw contributes to a sustainable future and society.
“Together, we have been working hard for years to create healthy and sustainable workplaces in the Netherlands. Of course, we are very proud to have achieved this milestone with this office. In our view, it sets a new standard in creating what we call a vital working environment.”
– Robert Pleijsier
Conscious Builder
Pleijsier Bouw is a Conscious Builder.
Pleijsier Bouw is a Conscious Builder. What does that mean? “Conscious Builders” is a code of conduct for construction sites issued by the Conscious Builders Foundation. The Conscious Builders Foundation assesses construction sites based on a number of criteria, all related to ‘Building Consciously’ in the broadest sense of the word.
This code of conduct is based on five pillars, namely: environment, safety, craftsmen, environment, and care. You can read more about this code of conduct at: www.bewustebouwers.nl.

People as a starting point
The family businesses develop work and living environments based on the philosophy that the well-being and health of the building’s users should be the starting point.
Twenty years ago, Borghese and Pleijsier Bouw already shared the vision that the most valuable and distinctive factor in organizations is still the people. In this vision, the vitality of employees directly determines the success of an organization. This vision has always guided development and construction. The achieved certifications are a nice bonus, but not a goal in themselves. With the attainment of the certification, Pleijsier sees the office building as a flagship for the companies:
“By working closely together and paying great attention to the wishes and requirements of the users in 2019, we were able to realize this building. The certifications are a wonderful recognition of all efforts, but ultimately it is about the people who work here. After all, a certified sedum roof has little value if it is overshadowed by high absenteeism due to illness.”

WELL Gold and BREEAM-NL
The achieved Gold certification of the WELL Building Standard is part of the first and only certification system for creating and monitoring a work environment that contributes to the health and well-being of employees.
WELL sets high standards for the following building aspects: air and water quality, healthy food, lighting, work comfort, and the well-being of the building’s users. BREEAM-NL New Construction and Renovation is the leading certification in the Netherlands for evaluating the sustainability performance of new construction projects and large-scale renovations. The BREEAM rating ranges from Pass to Outstanding, with the latter being the highest possible rating.
